If you are looking to join a club with ‘like-minded people’ then Rotary may not be for you!

You see, in Rotary we value a range of perspectives across a raft of topics. These strategic partnerships and subsequent open communication also forge bipartisan political support within Rotary. No other organisation is quite like Rotary. By using our voice consistently in all our messaging, we can ensure that our communications reflect our distinct character. Rotary New Farm is proud to have Councillor for Central Ward Vicki Howard (Charter Member), Hon. Grace Grace MP Minister for Education, Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Racing and Stephen Bates MP Member for Brisbane (Honorary Member (Elect)) to share perspectives and a position that brings unique ideas to the table.

Expect to see a WordPress weekly focussing how members can engage in the key areas of service (as outlined above) and how this engagement could be practised at a local – national and international level. These areas of service do not exist in a ‘silo’ and are inextricably linked. We’ll also keep you posted on ‘what RNF have been up to!’.

This week the video campaign, ‘Zero Dose Children’ covers disease prevention and treatment and emphasises the importance of vaccines for children. Its release comes right before World Immunization Week 24-30 April, this is an opportunity to publicize to our community the effectiveness of vaccines and the steadfast work to eradicate polio by Rotary and our partners. Recently the Sydney Morning Herald ran a story around ‘vaccine confidence dropping’ within Australia, possibly the results of the debates around the C19 vaccines. https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/confidence-in-childhood-vaccines-declines-in-australia-worldwide-20230419-p5d1ke.html

In addition, Rotary’s ‘The Global Polio Eradication Initiative’ estimates that the polio vaccine has saved more than 20 million children around the world from paralysis. However, approximately 12.5 million children are totally unvaccinated. They’re known as zero-dose children and vaccinating them is critical to stopping polio for good. Were you aware that children are still contracting this preventable disease? As of 2022, endemic wild poliovirus type 1 remains in two countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan. https://www.who.int/health-topics/poliomyelitis Australia has been Polio-free since 2000.

Next week we are introducing area of service: Peace and Conflict Prevention / Resolution. Until then, thank you for reading!
